Some English legends

Saint George

Saint George versus the dragon

The traditional account of the life of Saint George is considered to have originated in the 4th century. According to it, he was born to a Christian family during the late 3rd century. His father was from Cappadocia (now in Turkey) and served as an officer of the army. His mother was from Lydda, Palestine. She returned to her native city as a widow along with her young son.

 King Arthur

King Arthur

In one version Arthur obtains the throne by pulling a sword, Excalibur, from a stone and anvil. In this account, this act could not be performed except by "the true king", meaning the divinely appointed king or true heir of Uther Pendragon. Another legend tells how Excalibur was taken from a hand rising from a lake and given to Arthur sometime after he began to reign by a sorcerous damsel.

Excalibur               Merlin

Merlin
He lived a long time, raised a boy to be a king, propped up a Utopian empire with his magic and wisdom, and then watched as it all crumbled under such banal forces as vengeance and betrayal.

The Round Table

The Round Table was a mystical table in Camelot around which Arthur and his knights sat to discuss matters crucial to the security of the realm. In some versions, the wizard Merlin also has a seat.

Robin Hood & Maid Marion

Robin is famous for his gallantry, robbing the rich to feed the poor and fighting against injustice and tyranny. Anyone who knows of Robin has also heard the stories of his outlaw band. The names of Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, Allan a Dale, Will Scarlet, Much the Miller and the evil Sheriff of Nottingham are as much a part of the legend as Robin Hood himself.
The stories of Robin portray him as a fearless outlaw leading his band of "merry men" (and women) against the tyranny of Prince John, The Sheriff of Nottingham and Sir Guy of Gisbourne. A brilliant archer, Robin lived a life of adventure - poaching the King's deer from the outlaws' retreat in Sherwood Forest.
